The girl who, at the age of 19, was told to meet a "dark-skinned man," eventually became the third wife of Indonesian President Sukarno. Amidst the turmoil of her life—the deaths of her mother and brother, a coup d'état, and exile—she met actor Masahiko Tsugawa, who was the same age as her. Their relationship lasted only two months. Weekly magazines reported it as a "love affair of the century" and an "unforgivable adulterous love," and eventually, they parted ways. Afterward, Madame Dewi spoke publicly about Tsugawa at least five times. Tsugawa, however, never spoke about him.
