We live every day within the sense of "I." But what exactly is that "I"? H.M., a man who became unable to create new memories after having his hippocampus removed from his brain. He was the first person to open his eyes every morning. If so, was he a different person every day? The philosopher David Hume said that no matter how deeply he looked into his inner self, he could not find a fixed entity called "I." The 11th-century Confucian scholar Cheng Hao read the boundaries of the ego in the paralysis of his hands and feet. And modern neuroscience has discovered, through mirror neurons, that our brains do not completely separate "me" from "others." And at the Solvay Conference of 1927—the very place where Einstein and Bohr clashed—physics confronted an uncomfortable possibility: That the act of observation creates reality. And that consciousness might lie at the end of that chain. Is consciousness an electrical signal within the brain? Or is it some property inherent to the universe? And why do we exist in a separated state? I will not provide a conclusion. I will follow the questions together.
