This was no different when the Red Army introduced the T-64, the first truly Soviet MBT developed specifically to replace the roles of medium and heavy tanks. It also boasted significant technological advancements, such as being the first production tank to use composite armor, the first Soviet tank with an autoloader, and the first in its nation to use its now legendary and still capable 125mm gun. However, with all these advantages, which frankly posed a threat... It outperformed most NATO vehicles at the time of its introduction, yet it was never used in combat while the Soviet Union existed, so it's worth asking: Why not take advantage of the most advanced weapon in their arsenal while the Red Army still had the chance? What were all its characteristics? And more importantly, why is this tank one of the most important in the history of Russian armored vehicle development? We're about to find out.
