Hollywood born and raised Diane Baker started acting in her late teens. Not known for westerns, the actress discusses her work on such TV classics as WAGON TRAIN, THE VIRGINIAN, THE BIG VALLEY and in THE DANGEROUS DAYS OF KIOWA JONES starring Robert Horton, Sal Mineo, Nehemiah Persoff and Gary Merrill. She learned to ride while making Disney’s THE HORSE IN THE GRAY FLANNEL SUIT because she portrayed a horse trainer. Diane was also in one of the highest rated TV shows of all time, the two part finale of THE FUGITIVE as Richard Kimble’s lover. In "A Woman of the House," one of two episodes Diane did on BONANZA, she wrongly assumes Lorne Greene's understanding of her anguish over alcoholic husband (Paul Richards) for love. Both guest stars give heartbreaking performances. Working on THE BIG VALLEY, the young actress was impressed with star Barbara Stanwyck for multiple reasons which she discusses in this conversation with producer and western historian Rob Word during a recent interview for A WORD ON WESTERNS. As a Hollywood youngster, her friendship with the children of Academy Award winning actor Melvyn Douglas and his wife, Helen Gahagan, helped open Diane’s eyes to the exciting world of acting.
