The Search for the Six Million Names
Since its inception in 1953, Yad Vashem has worked tirelessly to collect the names of each and every man, woman and child murdered in the Holocaust and thereby remember them. They have been gathered one by one - from Pages of Testimony submitted in memory of friends and loved ones, collected by researchers who have painstakingly scoured archival materials to identify names of victims, and amassed by experts implementing advanced technology to uncover name after name in order to complete this vital task.Today, Yad Vashem's Hall of Names houses 2.75 million Pages of Testimony and the online Central Database of Shoah Victims' Names includes over 4,800,000 names. Dr. Haim Gertner, Director of the Yad Vashem Archives and Fred Hillman Chair for Holocaust Documentation, will present an fascinating look behind-the-scenes of this unique endeavor, including a glimpse of documents rarely viewed by the public.
