Hiking Horseshoe Canyon Utah / full trail hike / Canyonlands / petroglyphs
Hiking Horseshoe Canyon, formerly known as Barrier Canyon, is in a remote area west of the Green River and north of the Canyonlands National Park Maze District in Utah, United States. This Canyon is well known for it's stunning petroglyphs and pictographs. Many of the ancient drawings are believed to date back over 10,000 years. Some Images are life size, standing over 6 feet tall! There are four rock art panels along the 7 mile out and back trail consisting of The High Gallery, Horseshoe Shelter, Alcove Gallery and The Great Gallery. Binoculars and a telescopic lense are required to view The HIgh Gallery and The great Gallery because the images are a fair distance away from the viewing area. Horseshoe Canyon is located in a very remote region of Canyonlands National Park and the hike is strenuous and not recommended during summer months. There is no cell service and the summer temperatures regularly reach over 100 degrees. The access road connecting Green River to Hanksville is a remarkable scenic drive but can be inaccessible directly after and during rainy weather.
