On the afternoon of June 17, Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing arrived at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station by high-speed rail, beginning the second leg of his visit to China. This time, Min Aung Hlaing did not first visit neighboring southwestern provinces of China such as Yunnan, but went directly from Beijing to Shanghai, drawing considerable attention. The underlying logic is clear: although Shanghai does not border Myanmar, it is a "key interface" for the deepening of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor—industries, technology, and capital converge here, and trade and logistics are accelerating across the board. In April this year, Shanghai's imports and exports to Myanmar exceeded US$64 million in a single month; the Shanghai Port-Yangon shipping route has been increased, and with the addition of the "Shanghai-Yunnan-Lancang-Mekong Railway" freight train, an efficient channel has begun to take shape. The overall trade volume between China and Myanmar is equally impressive: China has been Myanmar's largest trading partner for many years, with bilateral trade reaching US$19.4 billion last year, a 19% increase. Chinese machinery and vehicles are exchanged for Myanmar's agricultural products and minerals, demonstrating strong complementarity. The Yangtze River Delta region has a high concentration of manufacturing industries, making Shanghai an important starting point for exports to Myanmar; Myanmar's gems and agricultural products also leverage Shanghai's foreign trade platform to reach the rest of the country. More noteworthy is industrial upgrading—the Yangtze River Delta region, where Shanghai is located, is at the forefront globally in fields such as new energy, AI, and robotics, attracting visits from leaders of many countries this year. One of the key focuses of the Myanmar president's trip is to connect with these new drivers of growth. Currently, Shanghai's new energy companies have already established several photovoltaic and operation and maintenance projects in Myanmar, with their technology and investment deeply embedded in the local energy transition. Currently, Myanmar still faces challenges such as a weak economy, security pressures, and post-earthquake reconstruction. Min Aung Hlaing's trip emphasizes "strengthening cooperation and identifying tangible opportunities." It is expected that he will visit companies and hold dialogues with representatives from the Yangtze River Delta region. The signal is clear: China-Myanmar cooperation is shifting from "paving the way" to "deepening industrial development."
