How to Short Block Rebuild - Hyundai / Kia - Cylinder Bore Examine & Prep (2.4 GDI) - Ep. 1
I've rebuilt around a dozen Hyundai and Kia 2.4L engines "soup to nuts" and these series of videos will help you to rebuild any aluminum 4 banger with steel cylinder liners. If the engine bore is not too badly worn, glazed and scored, I use a Lisle plateau cylinder honing tool to get a good cross hatch finishing pattern with minimal metal removal. Flex hone tools will not remove mild high spots in the bore and will simply scratch over it resulting in an imperfect bore surface for new rings. With the block shown in this video, honing was not viable; there were both deep vertical scored lines and glazed bore flat spots that my honing stones couldn't remove. The bores had to be shaved and opened up to remove imperfections and make them concentric. Before bringing the block to the engine machine shop, I looked for available oversized pistons. Around .5mm or .020" oversized pistons and rings were readily available from various parts vendors. Nothing of greater size was available. I then checked with my engine machinist if .5mm of material could be realistically and safely removed from the steel cylinder liners thereby avoiding the need to "re-sleave" new liners. He normally rebores V8 engines by .030 to .040. In lieu of using his boring machine, he used his oil spray honing machine using course honing stones to bore out the cylinders. He was able to remove exactly .020 wall thickness, enough to successfully remove all bore imperfections, and finished by providing a nice cross hatching patten. In the next video, I show you how I stalled new oversized piston rings onto the new oversized pistons along with new connecting rods.
