Wild Ginger - Asarum canadense - Grow Wild Ginger

Wild Ginger is a great N. American native, shade loving ground cover that is perfect for the woodland garden. Some people have used it as a diet aide, but the primary "active" ingredient in Asarum canadense is aristolochic acid. Aristolochic acid damages your kidneys in acute or chronic doses, and leads to decreased kidney size, fibrosis, and impairment of renal function. Taken chronically, as a diet aide, renal failure can occur in as little as a few months. Aristolochic acid is carcinogenic and strongly linked to urothelial carcinomas of the urinary tract.
