A common mistake is not even looking at the list of ingredients. Dairy products – as the name suggests – should consist primarily of milk. But many contain flavorings, colorings, thickeners, or added sugar. From a nutritional point of view, these have no place there. Another mistake: Products are often thrown away immediately after the best-before date. Many dairy products are still good even after that. A simple smell or taste test is often enough to determine this. The "light" trap is also a classic. Many people automatically reach for the 0.1% fat version because fat in the diet is still considered problematic. But fat is an essential nutrient. And in moderation, the fat content in dairy products – especially fermented products like yogurt – is perfectly acceptable from a health perspective. Personally, I usually reach for the classic 3.8% milk. It's also often assumed that all dairy products are automatically probiotic – but that's not true. In many products, such as hard cheese, all beneficial bacteria are killed by pasteurization or storage. A probiotic effect can only be assumed if it explicitly states that live cultures are present. And last but not least, calories in dairy products are often underestimated. A cup of fruit yogurt can easily contain 200 calories – more than a scoop of ice cream.
