Optimising Herbal Ley Swards: Insights to David's GS4 Mix and On-Farm Research

In this video, David Cross discusses his 2022 GS4 mix, soon to be the SAM 3 mix, tailored specifically for the farm. This mix includes more legumes, cocksfoot, and timothy, with fewer perennial ryegrasses compared to standard off-the-shelf mixtures. David explains the methods for establishing the mix, the ideal timing, and the post-establishment management practices. He and Lizzie Sagoo also discuss their on-farm research, comparing different drilling dates and mixtures. These findings have significantly influenced David's current approach to establishing herbal ley swards. Additionally, Lizzie discusses their involvement in the AHDB Livestock in Arable project, where they conducted a side-by-side comparison of a conventional grass-clover mix and a traditional herbal ley mix with red clover.
