Take a Break with Karen: Dan Cochrane Talks Timber History, Civic Legacy, and Local Family Life
Welcome back to another episode of "Take a Break with Karen," proudly sponsored by Wahkiakum West! 🌲🎙️ In today’s episode, Karen invites you to get to know one of the most dedicated and long-serving members of our community, Wahkiakum County Commissioner Dan Cochrane. Having served as commissioner for 20 years, Dan has guided our local government through highs and lows, all driven by a deep love for the county he was raised in. Dan shares what it's like to build a retirement home right where he grew up playing in the waters of Duck Creek (Elochoman area), watching his own grandkids fish the exact same waters. Before his two decades in public office, Dan spent 38 years as a professional timber faller for Crown Zellerbach, Weyerhaeuser, and his own logging crews. He provides an incredible eyewitness account of the major transitions in the PNW logging industry—from the days of massive old-growth trees and stepping onto springboards to the highly mechanized, modern era of hydraulic shears. Karen and Dan also dive deep into the essential issues facing our region today, including: 🪓 The ongoing 28.4-million-dollar unitary trust timber project aiming to keep Pacific, Skamania, and Wahkiakum counties whole. 🦌 The unique habits of our local elk herds and the dynamics of our modern lowlands. 🤝 Addressing local zoning, property safety, and junk car ordinances post-pandemic. 🏡 Dan’s incredible personal legacy, including his 49-year marriage to his wife Paula and their journey fostering and adopting 12 children. Whether he's navigating complex state timber legislation in Olympia or volunteering his time to drop a dangerous tree or clear a clogged pipe for a neighbor, Dan represents the true spirit of a community-first neighbor. A massive thank you to Wahkiakum West for keeping our coastal communities connected and making these essential neighborhood conversations possible!
