When modelling multiphysical processes in systems containing thin structures (layers, plates, shells, coatings), problems may arise due to the small size of the elements of the computational grid required to resolve thin structures. Given the high scale ratio between the characteristic geometric dimensions of the computational domain and the thin structures, solving the full-scale problem may require unreasonably large computational resources and take a long time. One way to solve this problem is to use special interfaces and models with reduced spatial dimensions. In this webinar, we will discuss approaches to modelling thin structures implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics® version 5.5. We will present an overview of specialised interfaces for modelling thin structures in various fields of physics. Using examples from mechanics, heat transfer, hydrodynamics, mass transfer, and charge transfer, we will demonstrate the use of interfaces and special nodes for optimal and economical calculation of processes in thin structures.
