Pane Quotidiano, the Milanese charitable organization that provides basic necessities free of charge to those in need, continued its work during the holidays. From 7:30 a.m., before the gates opened, until 11 a.m., 3,500 to 4,000 people lined up every day between the two locations on Viale Toscana and Viale Monza, with suitcases and bags ready to be filled. In 2022, with the consequences of the COVID-19 emergency and the Ukrainian crisis, record numbers were reached, reaching up to 5,000 daily visitors on Saturdays and during the Christmas holidays, for a total of 1.2 million visits over the course of the year. "There has been an increase of around 20-22%," explains Giorgio Vergnani, manager of the Viale Monza location. "The population is definitely suffering." "On Christmas Eve, we set up a stall with some gifts on display," says volunteer Alice Bassani. "It was wonderful to see the children approaching so happily."
