Lesson 3 | Sunday, July 12 THE PROBLEM OF CLOSED GROUPS IN THE CHURCH Paul’s exhortation that “there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought” (1 Corinthians 1:10) dominates the first four chapters of 1 Corinthians. In fact, most scholars agree that unity is the overarching theme that unites all parts of the letter. Read 1 Corinthians 1:12–17. How does this passage help us understand how absurd it is to form cliques around local leaders? What is Paul’s solution? Paul uses strong words to describe the lack of unity among the members of the Corinthian church. It uses the Greek terms schisma (“division,” 1 Cor. 1:10) and eris (“strife,” 1 Cor. 1:11). The noun schisma (as well as the verb schizō, meaning “to divide”) is used elsewhere in the New Testament to describe differences of opinion that lead to factions. In turn, the noun eris appears frequently in lists of improper conduct that Christians should avoid. Read Romans 1:29; 13:13; 1 Corinthians 3:3; 2 Corinthians 12:20; Galatians 5:20. What other sins are listed along with strife? What does this tell us about how bad it is? Disagreements in the Corinthian church came to light, even in the form of lawsuits between members (1 Cor. 6:1-3). “I say this to your shame,” Paul states (1 Cor. 6:5) regarding these lawsuits among church members. In fact, they didn’t even set aside their differences when they celebrated the Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11:17-22). The problem of disunity among church members is so alarming, and Paul is so concerned about it, that it is the first issue he addresses in his letter to the Corinthians. Read 1 Corinthians 1:12-27 again. Then reflect on how this passage helps us understand why factions are so dangerous to church unity.
