KRAKATAU 1883: Dzień, w którym Ziemia zamieniła się w piekło
August 27, 1883, 10:02 a.m. Krakatoa explodes with the force of 200 megatons of TNT—thirteen times louder than the first atomic bomb. Thirty-six thousand casualties. The sound is heard 4,800 kilometers away, on Rodrigues Island. The shock wave circles the Earth seven times. The sky over the world turns red for three years. This episode retraces ninety-nine days of ignored warnings, the phreatomagmatic mechanism, Rogier Verbeek's investigation, the 1888 Royal Society report, and the slow rebirth of Anak Krakatoa—a volcano that still breathes beneath the Sunda Strait today. Official death toll according to Dutch data: 36,417. Explosion energy according to USGS: approximately 200 megatons of TNT. Maximum sound range: 4,800 km (Rodrigues). Number of times the shock wave orbited the Earth: 7, recorded on barographs in Greenwich, Vienna, Toronto, and Washington. Ash column height: approximately 80 km. Global cooling in 1884: 0.5–1.2°C. Steamship "Berouw" moved 2.8 km into Sumatra. Anak Krakatau emerged from the caldera floor in December 1927; December 22, 2018 eruption: 437 casualties. WORKING HYPOTHESES A phreatomagmatic mechanism is widely accepted as the primary cause of the escalation, but the precise dynamics of seawater inflow into the magma chamber are still being modeled. Some recent studies suggest an actual death toll higher than the official colonial estimate. OPEN QUESTIONS Did the colonial administration deliberately delay the response, or was it bureaucratic inaction? The full chronology of the 32 warnings in Appendices 4–6 of the Verbeek Report only became publicly available in 1938. The precise geometry of the Anak Krakatau magma chamber has not yet been fully mapped. SCIENTIFIC REFERENCES Volcanology and mechanism: Self, S. & Rampino, M.R. (1981). The 1883 eruption of Krakatau.
