Microbial Mat Biogeochemistry (geobiology)
Microbial mats grow on sediment surfaces with the organisms organized by their metabolisms. In this video, I discuss a typical mat organization with oxygenic phototrophs at the top with aerobic respirers, sulfate reducers, and fermenters as part of the community. I show example biogeochemical gradients from the water into the mat, reflecting metabolic processes.
