The Ice Finally Let Go | Leaving Our Off-Grid Island for Montana

After weeks of waiting through the spring breakup at our off-grid island cabin, the ice finally begins to let go — just in time for us to pack up and start the long road west. This week, we’re still ice-locked from the mainland, enjoying the peace and quiet of cabin life while getting more and more excited to head toward Montana, where Caroline, Matthew, and the newest little member of the family are waiting. Before we can leave, Pete clears ice away from the lake, tows larger ice floats into the open, and carefully works through shifting ice as the wind nearly closes off our path back to the cabin. Meanwhile, Carol drives south to where Caroline and Matt used to live, loading the truck with their belongings so we can bring everything with us to Montana. Then, finally, we’re packed up and rolling west on a 1,600-mile — or 2,600-kilometre — road trip. We cross into the United States at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and settle into our first camp of the journey.
