Die Schwarzenburg bei Waldkirch im Breisgau

Opposite Waldkirch in the southern Black Forest, not far from Freiburg im Breisgau, Kastelburg Castle is visible from afar. But Waldkirch has another castle. It is much older and lies hidden on the opposite Schwarzenberg hill. Schwarzenburg Castle is situated between the Elz and Glotter valleys at an altitude of 658 meters above sea level on a foothill of the Kandel massif. Protected by natural slopes, the castle grounds cover an area of 130 meters by 40 meters. To the south, two ditches separate an outer bailey, located on a plateau, from the main castle. Particularly in the area of the main castle, remnants of walls hint at the once imposing structure.
