Together, we explore several abandoned fortifications, descend into a bunker through an original access shaft, and discover massive armored doors, machine gun emplacements, observation cupolas, original washrooms and crew quarters, as well as rare construction plaques from 1940. The extraordinary camouflage of these structures is particularly impressive. Some bunkers have been given artificial rock formations, while others feature deceptively realistic imitations of tree bark and specially developed camouflage panels that render them virtually invisible. Between the 1930s and 1940s, Italy, under Benito Mussolini, had thousands of bunkers, casemates, and artillery fortifications built along its borders.
