2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Misfires & Lean Codes

A 2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV was towed into the shop because the engine would barely run. After getting it started, the engine was sputtering badly and running on multiple cylinders with severe misfires. The scan tool showed misfire codes and a system too lean condition, but the evidence didn't quite add up. During the diagnosis, I noticed something unusual: the fuel tank was completely full while the hybrid battery was almost dead. That observation led me down the diagnostic path that ultimately revealed the real problem. A fuel sample confirmed the issue—the tank was filled with E85 gasoline, and the Mazda CX-90 PHEV is NOT a flex-fuel vehicle.
