The Man I Married (also released under the title I Married a Nazi) is a 1940 American drama directed by Irving Pichel. Released before the United States entered World War II, the film is notable for its bold anti-Nazi message and its use of authentic newsreel footage to depict the rise of Nazi Germany. Plot: Carol Hoffman (Joan Bennett), an American woman, is happily married to Eric Hoffman (Francis Lederer), a German-born engineer living in New York. Together with their young son, Ricky, they travel to Germany in 1938 to visit Eric's father after many years apart. Once in Germany, Carol is shocked by the growing influence of the Nazi regime. Eric, who initially seems indifferent to politics, gradually becomes captivated by Nazi ideology and begins embracing its beliefs. As he falls deeper under the regime's influence, Carol realizes that both her marriage and her son's future are in danger. While trying to help a family friend whose brother has been imprisoned in the Dachau concentration camp, Carol witnesses the brutality and oppression of the Nazi state firsthand. Determined to protect her son from indoctrination, she risks everything to escape Germany before it is too late.
