Igor Dmitrievich Volotovsky is a distinguished scientist in the fields of photobiology, biophysics, cell biology, and biotechnology. "Everything comes from family," says one of Belarus's leading biophysicists. His mother worked in the dairy industry, but science was no stranger to her. Thanks to her keen mind, she developed a new product – dietary cheese. Igor Dmitrievich's father, although employed in agriculture, was also involved in scientific research: together with his wife, he invented a modern methodology for producing cultured butter, and defended his dissertation at the age of 70. Igor Dmitrievich heeded his mother's advice and graduated from the Minsk State Medical Institute. He then worked for two years as the head of a rural district hospital. After completing his studies, he was finally convinced that he wanted to pursue a career in science, and in 1964, he entered graduate school at the Laboratory of Biophysics and Isotopes of the Academy of Sciences of the Byelorussian SSR. His mentor was Sergei Konev, the founder of the Belarusian school of photobiology and membrane biophysics. The Voltovsky family now forms a true scientific and medical dynasty—his son, daughter-in-law, grandson, and granddaughter all work in medicine. His wife was also a physician. During his long professional career, Igor Dmitrievich Volotovsky served as Director of the Institute of Biophysics and Cell Engineering of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, Vice President, and Acting President of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. He pioneered the introduction of the PCR method into research and the study and application of stem cells in our country. Thanks to him and his colleagues, the biophysics school in Belarus remains at a high level.
