Inside Ireland's most famous school - Wilson's Hospital School
A 30-minute walk from the nearest village, the principal of Wilson’s Hospital School jokes that its remote location makes it a bit like Alcatraz. There’s little chance of pupils mitching class here. But the “most famous school in the country”, outside Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath, has been under siege of late, due to a certain persistent visitor at the school gates. As the Sunday Independent was given access to the school this week, Enoch Burke turned up — again and again. Former Ireland rugby boss Joe Schmidt coached here in the early 1990s, it has boarding fees of up to €20,000 and its 455 students are among the brightest in the country.
