We Crossed Into Mexico on a Tiny Boat

This might be the most interesting border crossing in America. In Big Bend National Park, we crossed the Rio Grande by flat-bottom boat into the small Mexican village of Boquillas del Carmen. Once across, we hopped on donkeys for a short ride into town, where we met our local guide who shared stories about the village’s history, people, and way of life. We explored local shops, hiked through the nearby sand dunes, and had lunch at both of the town’s restaurants — José Falcon’s and Boquillas Restaurant & Bar. After a full day of exploring, we rode the donkeys back to the river, crossed the border once more by boat, and returned to the U.S. This tiny village depends almost entirely on tourism, and it was one of the most memorable cultural experiences we’ve ever had.
