How The Beatles – Please Please Me (The Lost Slow Version) May Have Sounded
What did Please Please Me sound like before George Martin sped it up? On September 4th 1962 at Abbey Road Studio 2, The Beatles rehearsed a much slower, Roy Orbison-inspired version of the song — one George Martin later described as “very dreary” before suggesting they increase the tempo. This video recreates what that lost arrangement may have sounded like. I reduced the tempo to 122 BPM — matching Roy Orbison’s “Only The Lonely,” the record John Lennon said inspired him when writing the song. The later bridge call-and-response has been removed, the rhythm returns to a single-strum Orbison feel, and the ending shifts into a waltz-style close, reflecting how it may have evolved during those early sessions. All instruments were played and recorded by me using period-correct gear, including Hofner bass and Epiphone J-160E. Drum parts were reconstructed from isolated early Beatles recordings. No AI was used — this is a fully performed and arranged recreation. If you’re interested in how small production decisions changed Beatles history, this one’s for you. #TheBeatles #PleasePleaseMe #Beatles #AbbeyRoad #BeatlesHistory
