Islamic philosophy, also often called Arabic philosophy and Muslim philosophy, is a systematic study of life, the universe, ethics, morality, knowledge, thought, and political ideas conducted within the Islamic world or Muslim civilization and related to Islamic teachings. In Islam, there are two terms closely related to the concept of philosophy—falsafa (literally "philosophy"), which refers to the study of philosophy, natural science, and logic, and Kalam, which refers to the study of religious theology. Historically, the development of Islamic philosophy can be said to have begun with the influence of Hellenistic culture, which occurred as a result of the meeting of Eastern (Persian) and Western (Greek) cultures. This influence began when Alexander the Great, a student of Aristotle, successfully conquered Persia in 331 BC. This cultural acculturation gave rise to the seeds of philosophical study in Muslim society later on. The large-scale translation of scientific literature from Greece and other cultures into Arabic during the Abbasid era (750-1250 CE) arguably had the greatest influence on the emergence and development of classical Islamic philosophical studies.
