He was born around 292 in the Thebaid. His family was pagan and wealthy. But even as a child, strange things happened to him. He couldn't drink the wine from a sacrificial libation to idols. During a pagan ritual, an evil spirit testified: this boy is hostile to our gods. Remove him. In 315, Pachomius was drafted into the army. The recruits were transported along the Nile, stopped in the city of Esna, and placed in a dungeon under guard. And then local Christians arrived. With food. Just like that. Strangers. Pachomius asked: why? They explained to him: they do this for their God. The commandment is to love one's neighbor. All people are neighbors. This was enough. He vowed to become a Christian. Then he was baptized. He settled in an empty pagan temple. He cultivated a garden and fed the poor. Then he found the elder Palamon and entered the terrifying school of monastic life: nightly prayers, fasting, manual labor, obedience. One day, Pachomius heard a voice: "Build a monastery here." Then an angel appeared to him in the guise of a schemamonk and handed him the monastic rules. The rules of communal life were inscribed on a copper plaque. Thus began the first communal monastery in the history of Christianity. Under his leadership were 7,000 monks. Nine men's monasteries. A women's monastery for his sister, Maria. He introduced a uniform monastic rule, identical clothing, identical food, obedience, and rosary. But the main thing about him was not the scale. Pachomius understood: the letter of the rule should not kill the spirit of love. When a sick monk asked for some beef, and the brothers refused, Pachomius wept and said, "Where is the fear of God? God said: love your neighbor as yourself." Towards the end of his life, a terrible prophecy was revealed to him. Christ said: a time will come when faith will weaken, there will be no leaders, no examples, everything will be against us. But those who endure will receive the same reward as the first.
