It was Vukašin Mandrap. A merchant from Herzegovina. A parish choir singer. Until the spring of 1941. In April, Germany occupied Yugoslavia. The Independent State of Croatia was established on the territory of Croatia and Bosnia. At the head of the Ustaše, Croatian fascists under Ante Pavelić, were the Ustaše. Serbs were outlawed. They could be killed, tortured, robbed of their property, and driven from their homes with impunity. The most notorious death camp was Jasenovac. There were no gas chambers here. They were killed differently. People were starved. They were beaten with rods, killed with sledgehammers, had nails driven into their heads, had their stomachs ripped open, and their bodies were drowned in the Sava. When the genocide began in Sarajevo, Vukašin returned to his native Klepac. The Ustaše reached there, too. His entire family was slaughtered—no one remained. He was sent to Jasenovac along with other surviving Serbs. He remained in the camp until January 1943. How he lived during those months, we don't know. We only know what happened that night. The executioner, Žila Friganović, ordered him to shout, "Long live Pavelic!" and threatened to cut off his ear. Vukašin remained silent. The executioner cut off his ear. Then the other. His nose. He threatened to cut out his living heart. The old man looked through him—as if into some infinity—and quietly but clearly said, "Child, do your work." These words drove the murderer mad. But then he confessed: "Since then, I have had no peace." He heard that voice even in his drunkenness and again saw the old man's clear gaze.
