Her bed, her favorite stuffed unicorn and practically every birthday gift crammed into the closet of 4-year-old Destiny Champagne's grandparents' house. To her parents, Destiny was just as magical as the toys they planned to give her for her 5th birthday in two weeks. But all those pink gifts will remain in the closet, unopened. The LaPlace girl died of asphyxiation Thursday after she became entangled with gift-wrapping ribbon tied to a bed in her grandparents' Reserve home, a St. John the Baptist Sheriff's Office spokesman said Friday. The ribbon, family members said, had been tied onto a toy that was hidden in the closet for her birthday. Destiny was found by family members Thursday around 5:33 p.m. in her grandparents' Parker Lane home hanging from a bedpost of their bed with a ribbon around her neck, Sheriff's Office spokesman Maj. Mike Tregre said. Tregre said family members cut her down, attempted to revive her and called 911. Members of the Reserve Volunteer Fire Department administered CPR to Destiny, who was taken to River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace, where she died. Investigators have ruled the death accidental, according to a Sheriff's Office report. Tregre said an autopsy was done Friday morning. Destiny, who found the ribbon in her grandparents' bedroom closet, was watching television in the bedroom while adults were elsewhere in the home. She was found hanging by the bedpost when her grandmother and aunt went into the bedroom to check on her, according to the report.
