Everything House Music & More... The Podcast | Ep. 48 | The Architect of House Music Chip E.
Chip E, often hailed as one of the founding fathers of house music. Chip recounts his journey from an 8-year-old disco enthusiast sneaking into kitty discos in the mid-1970s to becoming the creative force behind groundbreaking records like “Time to Jack” and “It’s House.” Raised by a mother who worked in advertising, Chip was exposed early to the creative arts. His interests in photography and music intersected when he joined New Expressions*, a citywide high school newspaper. There, he connected with future house influencers like Eric Bradshaw and attended his first underground party at *The Loft in 1980. While working at Imports Etc., Chip began labeling bins as “house music,” reflecting the local slang for the music played at the Warehouse. Though he doesn't claim to have coined the term, his role in its early branding was pivotal. Chip eventually became a go-to for selecting records for legends like Farley, Frankie, and Ron Hardy. Inspired by his exposure to music production at Columbia College and equipped with a reel-to-reel, Chip began crafting his own edits. Collaborating with Joe Smooth, E.T. Taylor, and others, he co-produced the *Jack Trax EP*, featuring bold tracks that intentionally defined and branded the emerging genre. His use of early samplers and drum machines like the 808 and 909 added a new sonic dimension to dance music. The episode also explores Chip’s early mentorship of Lidell Townsel and Chubby, his experience distributing records independently, and his deep admiration for both Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy. He closes with anecdotes about how records like “On and On” and “Fast Cars” were received in the scene, and how his early collaborations helped cement house music as a global genre. This episode celebrates Chip E’s pioneering innovations, his savvy in defining house music both sonically and culturally, and his foundational role in creating what would become one of Chicago’s most enduring musical legacies. **************************************************************************************** **************************************************************************************** Exclusive Content Available right now on the Everything House Music & More… The App 📱 ⬇️ DOWNLOAD → Everything House Music & More… The App 📱 📺 🎧 Exclusive Content ⤵️ 📱Google Play Store for Android: https://bit.ly/EHMM_Android 📱Apple App Store for iPhone: https://bit.ly/EHMM-iPhoneApp **************************************************************************************** **************************************************************************************** Everything House Music & More...
