Here, evil spirits are organically present in everyday life. Everyday comedy is combined with infernal horror, demonic eroticism with ideal beauty, behind which lurks a witch's spirit; piety coexists with blasphemy, tragedy with mockery. The copulation of the dim-witted seminarian Khoma Brut with a witch disguised as a beautiful young lady brings them pleasure indistinguishable from nightmare, and ultimately leads to death. Looking into the eyes of the monstrous Viy, the hero turns into a handful of ashes, and the author enters a new period of his creative work.
