After the Deep Freeze… Winter Photography in the Canadian Rockies

In this video, Brian Barnham and I continue our winter adventure through the Canadian Rockies. After enduring a deep freeze earlier in the trip, we finally make our way south in search of slightly warmer temperatures. Our first stop is Peyto Lake in Banff National Park, where we’re treated to a beautiful winter morning. Instead of focusing only on grand vistas, we spend time photographing both the larger landscape and the smaller details that winter reveals across the frozen terrain. From Banff, we continue south through Alberta until we reach Waterton Lakes National Park. In winter, the park feels like an entirely different place. With very few people around, the landscape takes on a quiet, almost magical quality. We head out early, hoping to photograph the first light hitting the mountains, but unfortunately, Brian runs into some camera issues and misses the opportunity. Luckily, the morning doesn’t disappoint, and we soon find ourselves surrounded by beautiful frost-covered trees glowing in backlit winter light. It turned out to be a perfect way to wrap up a fantastic trip through the Rockies. Throughout the adventure, we’re camping in my Toyota Tacoma with the Radica Moonlander X camper, which continues to prove itself an excellent setup for winter photography travel.
