Winter photography, Abraham Lake, -30°C, Radica Moonlander X camper, Yoho National Park, Natural Bridge, extreme cold landscape photography. In this episode, Brian Barnham and I continue our trip in the Canadian Rockies for a winter photography trip that quickly turns into one of the coldest shoots I’ve ever attempted. Temperatures at Abraham Lake drop well below -30 °C, and while I manage to make one image, functioning in that kind of wind and cold is another story altogether. Before we even get there, I realise I still need to properly winterise my Radica Moonlander X camper — something that becomes painfully obvious overnight. Let’s just say Brian’s snoring wasn’t the only thing keeping me awake. After battling the elements at Abraham Lake, we head south to Yoho National Park, where the temperatures are far more forgiving. We spend the day at Natural Bridge photographing intricate snow patterns and exploring new compositions in much calmer conditions. Winter landscape photography is never easy — but that’s often where the most memorable moments happen.
