2 Corinthians 12:9 — The Greek Truth of "My Grace Is Sufficient for You"
I had seen this phrase a thousand times: wall art, tattoo, photo caption on a bad day. "My grace is sufficient for you." I read it fast and thought I'd understood it. Until the day I got stuck on "sufficient." In English it sounds a bit dry, almost like "that's enough, stop bothering me." I went after it and it was the opposite: in the original, it's a grace that suffices and never stops sufficing. Then the whole phrase changed size for me. ——— 📖 Passages cited 2 Corinthians 12:9 (the central verse, "my grace is sufficient for you") 2 Corinthians 12:2-4 (the vision of the third heaven, fourteen years before) 2 Corinthians 12:7 (the thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan) Numbers 33:55, Ezekiel 28:24 and Hosea 2:6 (the "thorn" as hostile peoples in the Greek version of the Old Testament) Galatians 4:13-15 (Paul's reference to his own eyesight, basis of the eye-disease theory) 2 Corinthians 12:8 (Paul pleads three times for the thorn to depart) Matthew 26:39-44 (the three prayers of Jesus in Gethsemane) Philippians 4:11-13 (Paul learns to be content in any situation) John 19:30 ("it is finished," the word of Jesus on the cross) Exodus 40:34-35 (the glory of the Lord fills the tabernacle) John 1:14 (the Word became flesh and "dwelt" among us) 2 Corinthians 12:10 ("when I am weak, then I am strong") ——— 📚 Sources📚 Murray J.
