Northern Urals, copper mine, horizon deeper than a kilometer, winter 1977. Viktor Laptev's mining crew is digging a new drift and comes up against an old brick fill at the face, not seen on any plans. After breaking through, the miners enter an abandoned working: blackened supports, mine car rails, and along the walls—two-tiered bunks, rusty bowls, and rotted quilted jackets. This is a section of a camp mine from the late 1940s, where prisoners mined ore and lived underground; after the camp closed, the horizon was bricked up and erased from the plans. A date is carved into the supports. Work is halted, the drift is sealed with a grate, and the miners are asked not to talk. ⚠️ Some materials presented on the channel are artistic in nature and include elements of the author's reconstruction and interpretation of historical events.
