Short 330: The “Flying Boxcar” of Regional Aviation

The Short 330 is a twin-engine turboprop transport aircraft developed by Short Brothers in Northern Ireland. Introduced in 1976, it was designed as a low-cost regional airliner capable of carrying up to 30 passengers while operating from short and relatively unimproved runways. The aircraft became famous for its unusually box-shaped fuselage, earning nicknames such as the “Flying Shoebox” and “Boxcar.” The Short 330 evolved from the earlier Short Skyvan, a rugged utility aircraft known for its square-section fuselage and short takeoff and landing (STOL) performance. Engineers stretched the Skyvan's fuselage and wings while retaining its distinctive shape, creating an aircraft that could accommodate 30 passengers and more cargo without sacrificing its ability to operate from short airfields. The prototype first flew on 22 August 1974, and airline service began in 1976. The Short 330 served regional airlines across North America, Europe, and other parts of the world. Its low operating costs made it attractive to commuter airlines during the 1970s and 1980s. Cargo operators also valued its spacious fuselage and ability to carry bulky loads. Military versions served with the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force under the designation C-23 Sherpa. Production continued until 1992, with approximately 141 aircraft built. The design later evolved into the more streamlined Short 360, which featured a redesigned tail and improved aerodynamics. Although most passenger examples have been retired, a small number remain in cargo service and specialized roles today. Images belong to their respective owners.
