Two Storms (Past)

Such a storm tonight... hush now, it won't last... hush now, my darlings... the house is loud at last. Gather close, my little ones, the windows won't stop crying. My head is full of breaking glass — something in these walls is sighing. Stay inside where I can see you, don't you wander, don't you roam... Mommy's only trying to keep you safe and warm and home. But the storm is getting louder, and my thoughts won't hold their shape... there's a red door down the hallway and it's promising escape— Two storms, one tearing up the sky, one tearing up this room. Same rain, same thunder rolling, same family in the gloom. The past came back to find us — it never left at all. Two storms in two different years... and we're still gonna fall. I could keep you here forever, wouldn't that be something, loves? No more growing, no more leaving, no more cold from up above. The red door keeps on whispering the sweetest, simplest plan... forever, forever, forever — just take your Mommy's hand. The thunder's in my temples now, the children's faces blur... I can't tell the storm outside from the one I've become— THE HOUSE IS IN MY HEAD TONIGHT! (THE WALLS — THEY WON'T BE QUIET!) IF I KEEP THEM, THEY CAN'T LEAVE ME— NO STORM CAN EVER TRY IT! (FOREVER — FOREVER—) I just wanted to protect them... from the leaving, from the years. The house showed me a way to keep them... and it kissed away my fears. Two storms, and I am one of them, the lightning and the rain. Same blood that I would die for — same blood I'd take to save. The house has got its hand in mine, and I can't let it go... two storms become one storm, and oh, my loves — I'm so cold. Hush now... the storm won't last... forever, forever... we all come home. We all come home.
