It probably wasn't much. Maybe Rún flicked a petal at my nose with the tip of his snout, or maybe I caught a faceful of them and sneezed. Something that small. Golden motes of light drifted through the forest. Sunlight slipped down between the trees and lit each petal as it danced in the air, until it seemed the whole world was breathing, soft and slow. Every time the wind carried them past, the light was warm and bright, and I narrowed my eyes against it. Before I knew it, my eyes were shut, my mouth was wide open, and I was laughing out loud — from the pit of my belly, exactly as I had as a child, without a trace of pretense. Beside me, Rún — a green dragon grown so large now that I had to look up at him — rumbled happily in his throat. The cyan-and-gold runes glowing across his body flickered along with the laughter, the very light that had given him his name on the day we first met. He had once fit in the palm of my hand, that little hatchling. Somewhere along the way he had become the partner I leaned on. We had crossed so many skies, shared so many mornings. And yet, laughing here side by side, Rún was still the same mischief-maker from the day we met. There are plenty of heart-pounding moments in an adventure. The first wind cutting beneath your wings. An unknown city found beyond the clouds. But this was just an afternoon, with no real destination — nothing anyone would ever tell stories about. We simply stopped, and laughed together. That was all. The world stretched out wide in every direction, and there were still more places I longed to see than I could count — and still, in that one moment, there was nowhere else I wanted to be. Now that I'm grown, the days I remember first are, strangely, always days like this one. The light in the forest, the drifting petals, my partner laughing at my side. I had always thought treasure was something far away. All along, it had been right beside me, laughing with me. That ordinary afternoon — two voices of laughter melting into the dappled light — was the greatest treasure of all. I only understood that long, long after. Here, time flows gently.
