Magnesium Porsche 915 Transmission Rebuild (Accumoto); 915 Overview & Upgrades; Projekt Airkult Ep 9

In this episode, I drop off my transmission at Accumoto Motorsports for a rebuild/reseal. The 915 is the evolution of the 901 design, so before I get into my experience, I do a walk through of how the 901/915 transmission is laid out, so you understand more of the internals. My transmission had grinds in 2nd and 3rd sometimes, but was otherwise functioning properly. When the techs got into my transmission, the synchros/sliders were pretty beat, but the gears turned out to be okay! This is probably the least budget aspect of this car so far; but the porsche tax on transmission parts was unavoidable. After getting the quote from accumoto, I did shop around for parts but could not find any significant savings or ways to cut costs, so I just had them go for it. To prolong the life of the trans, I did spring for an upgraded billet bearing retention plate, which should strengthen the case a bit and help keep the bearing races nice and tight. I did look into attempting to rebuild the transmission myself, but the sheer amount of speciality tools along with complete lack of experience made this job one better left to the professionals. Join me as I stumble along rebuilding the drivetrain of my 77 Porsche 911S. To be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing. I've never owned an aircooled car before this one, there's a huge learning curve, and I've been avoiding this since I bought the car years ago. I can't afford to pay 911 prices on things, so I'll be doing as much of the work myself as possible.
