Jibokjae of Gyeongbokgung Palace means a “house where there is a collection of books that are as precious as jade.” In 1891, Jibokjae and Hyeopgildang, which were separate halls of Hamnyeongjeon Hall in Changdeokgung Palace, were moved to the west side of Geoncheonggung Palace and used as a private library for Emperor Gojong and a reception hall for foreign envoys. In the thirteenth year of his rule, Emperor Gojong wanted to implement a policy of enlightenment centering on the emperor by nurturing talented and bright individuals and embracing modern culture from the West. Jibokjae was built as a two-story building in the Qing dynasty architectural style with brick walls on both sides. Parujeong on its left is an octagonal pavilion with a splendid Qing-style nagyanggak, while Hyeopgildang is a Joseon-style building with an ondol (heated floor) room for relaxation.
