Open lecture with Professor Dr. Renata Wirthmann In this video, we study Jacques Lacan's text, published in 1958, "The Direction of the Treatment and the Principles of its Power." This writing is, above all, a return to Freud. The direction of the treatment is not governing the patient through the analyst's ego. The analyst's "power" is not charisma or moral authority, but an effect of place: it is because transference establishes him as a subject supposed to know that his word can operate. To direct is to manage this supposition, to make it work and, in the end, to dismiss it, so that the knowledge produced emerges from the subject himself. This is what we will discuss in this lecture. We complement this by examining the technical consequences of this orientation: interpreting is not explaining or building, but cutting the signifying chain, pointing out the misunderstanding and introducing a hole in the meaning. Logical time prevails over chronological time, and the session of variable duration appears as a clinical instrument—the decision is made at the moment when the truth erupts. The analyst's desire is not a personal affection, but rather the function of sustaining the lack and preventing transference from sliding into suggestion. Through metaphor, metonymy, and tufting, we situate the symptom as an effect of language articulated within an economy of jouissance.
