Jak wiele Wszechświata naprawdę widzimy? Kosmiczna sieć i ciemna materia | prof. Agnieszka Pollo
Despite increasingly precise telescopes and a growing amount of data, the picture of the Universe we possess remains incomplete. This is due not only to the vast scale of the cosmos, but also to the limitations of our instruments and the fact that we primarily observe luminous matter, while the framework of the Universe's large-scale structure is primarily formed by invisible dark matter. In today's episode, I had the pleasure of discussing the limits of observing the Universe with Professor Agnieszka Pollo, astrophysicist, Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs at the National Centre for Nuclear Research, and professor at the Jagiellonian University. We discuss, among other things, the cosmic web, galaxy mapping, redshift, dark matter, cosmological tensions, the Lambda-CDM model, galaxies we barely see, and the role of artificial intelligence in analyzing astronomical data. In this conversation, we address the following topics: How did the cosmic web form from tiny density disturbances in the early Universe, and why we need dark matter and dark energy to explain its structure? - How astronomers create three-dimensional maps of the Universe based on flat sky images, redshift, and spectroscopic and photometric measurements. How gravitational lensing allows us to study invisible matter, and what the S8 and Hubble voltages may reveal about the limitations of the current cosmological model. Why we can see a different cosmic web in ultraviolet, visible, and infrared light, and how this affects the possibility of practicing precise cosmology. Can artificial intelligence find anomalies in vast astronomical data sets that we were previously unable to predict or name? -------- Prof. Dr. Hab. Agnieszka Pollo is an astrophysicist, Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs at the National Centre for Nuclear Research, and a professor at the Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University. Her research focuses on observational cosmology, statistics of the large-scale structure of the Universe, galaxy evolution, multidimensional data analysis, and astroinformatics. She was a member of the steering committee of the international VIPERS galaxy survey and leads the Polish consortium for the LSST project associated with the Vera C. Rubin Observatory and Poland's participation in the POLAR-2 project. Her research contributes to a better understanding of the distribution of galaxies, the development of the cosmic web, and the limitations resulting from the fact that we can only study much of the matter in the Universe indirectly.
