Walking 35km Through Endless River Crossings (POV) | Te Araroa Trail Day 70-72

I walked through three very different days on New Zealand’s Te Araroa Trail. This section begins at Bealey Hut and continues through Lagoon Saddle A Frame Hut,Hamilton Hut before reaching Harper Campsite. The first day was short. Heavy rain moved in early, forcing me to stop after only 6km at Lagoon Saddle A Frame Hut. The second day became an unexpected zero day. The rain continued all day, and there was no safe reason to leave the hut. By the third day, the weather had finally improved enough to continue. What followed was one of the most challenging river-walking sections I had experienced so far. The Harper Valley Track required crossing the Harper River again and again. Although trail markers existed, simply following them was not enough. The route often disappeared into riverbeds, forcing constant route-finding and decisions about where to cross next. The river remained grey, cold, and fast-moving from the recent rain. Most of the day was spent moving between gravel flats, river crossings, and sections where the route was difficult to identify. The scenery improved near the end of the day, but reaching it required patience. No talking. No music. Just footsteps, water, wind, and the real sound of the trail.
