He didn't return, dinner got cold, and what was supposed to be a short flight turned into a round-the-world trip. Sit down, because here comes the story. All the preparations for departure went according to plan, and soon the California Clipper was in the air heading to Los Angeles. Poindexter had just called his wife to let her know he had arrived in Los Angeles and was already returning when Oscar Hendrickson, the other radio operator on that flight, said that Harry Strickland, the second radio operator who was going to fly on the California Clipper, had been taken to the hospital with suspected appendicitis. With no backup crew available in Los Angeles, this meant Poindexter was the only man who could take his place. Despite not having brought spare clothes or money, he would have to go with them to New Zealand. I hope he had time to buy some underwear before takeoff.
