CORGI 474 Wall's Ice Cream Van on Ford Thames 🎵 Musical Version 🎵 For the 400th Edition of DieCastRestos, I'm tackling a genuine vintage Corgi Wall's Ice Cream Van, based on the Ford Thames 307E. This particular model is the sought-after 474 Musical Ice Cream Van, introduced in the 1960s as an evolution of the earlier 447 Ice Cream Van. Unlike the standard 447, the 474 featured a miniature music box hidden inside the van which played a tune on the turn of a crank handle, making it one of the more innovative toys of its era. Although this model kindly sent to me by Andy Pollard was complete, it had clearly seen plenty of use over the decades. The paintwork was badly chipped, the Wall's decals were heavily worn, the stickers were missing, the chrome-plated front bumper was damaged, and the windows had developed slight yellowing. The biggest challenge, however, was the music box mechanism. Instead of playing its distinctive tune, it had deteriorated to the point where it would only produce a single note. In this video I dismantle and repair the mechanism, returning the van to full working order and giving it its music back for the first time in many years. The real vehicle behind the model, the Ford Thames 307E 5cwt, was introduced in 1961 and was mechanically derived from the hugely successful Ford Anglia 105E. Sharing the Anglia's reliable 997cc Kent engine, gearbox and many other components, the 307E provided businesses with a compact and economical light commercial vehicle. Its distinctive styling and widespread use by tradesmen, delivery services and specialist conversions for ice cream vendors made it a familiar sight on British roads throughout the 1960s.
