History of Sixth Military Coup in Nigeria (Babangida Overthrows Buhari; Detains Him for Three Years)

In this edition of Back in History we take you back in time to the events that characterized the 6th Military Coup in the post-independence history of Nigeria. This was the coup that saw to the overthrow of Major General Muhammadu Buhari and his Deputy - Tunde Idiagbon. At the time of the coup, Tunde was in Saudi Arabia observing the hajj. The coup was led by soldiers who were instrumental to Buhari's ascension to power but the soldiers soon fell out with Buhari for several reasons, one of which was that Buhari did not carry them along in his government. The other reason was that there was extreme hardship in the country with prices of goods becoming unbearable, hence the need (according to the coup plotters) to unseat the regime and form a new Government. The overthrow was announced by Brig. Joshua Dogonyaro while the names of the new leaders was announced, 12 hours after by Sani Abacha.
