History of the Fourth Military Coup in Nigeria (Murtala Killed; Obasanjo Takes Over; Dimka Arrested)
This video narrates the events that occurred in Nigeria in 1976 when Nigeria's third Military Head of State, Murtala Mohammed was cut into pieces by bullets pumped into his body by a group of soldiers led by Lt. Col. Buka Suka Dimka. The ever boisterous country of Nigeria became quiet and no one knew what exactly was going to happen next. Dimka went on air and announced the assassination to the world and told Nigerians to await further announcements. Olusegun Obasanjo who was Murtala's Deputy went into hiding for fear of being killed and when the dust began to settle, he emerged as the new Head of State, his boss having been killed and set for burial. The coup failed and Dimka ran for ''safety''. He was later arrested in Afikpo and taken before a Military Tribunal where he owned up to his action. He was tried, found guilty and executed. Others were also implicated in the coup and most of them were equally executed while others were sentenced to life imprisonment. This video captures it all and brings to the viewer, the events of the time with a view to refreshing memories and taking lessons for today and for the future.
