Balanceo de Ecuaciones: ION-ELECTRÓN en MEDIO ÁCIDO
Learn how to balance oxidation-reduction chemical equations using the ion-electron method in a basic medium. Many oxidation-reduction reactions can be easily balanced through trial and error. However, oxidation-reduction reactions occurring in an aqueous solution are often so complicated that balancing them by trial and error becomes tedious. This video will develop a systematic method for balancing the equations in these reactions. This method is particularly used to find the coefficients in a redox equation. To balance a reaction using this method, proceed as follows: Step 1. Write a schematic equation that includes those reactants and products that have undergone changes in their oxidation state. Step 2. Write half-reactions for the oxidizing agent and the reducing agent. Step 3. Equate each half-reaction in terms of the number of atoms of each element. In acidic or neutral solutions, add H2O and H+ to balance the oxygen and hydrogen. For each excess oxygen atom on one side of the equation, one molecule of H2O is added to the other side. Similarly, H+ ions are added to equal the hydrogen atoms. If the solution is basic, for each excess oxygen on one side of the equation, one molecule of H2O is added to the same side and 2OH- is added to the other side. Step 4. Equate each half-reaction in terms of the number of charges by adding electrons to the first or second side of the equation. Step 5. Equate the loss and gain of electrons on both sides by multiplying each half-reaction by the minimum coefficients. Step 6. Add the two half-reactions and simplify all common terms on both sides of the resulting equation. Step 7.
