The maximum amount of product that can be obtained according to the chemical equation from a given quantity of reactants is called the theoretical yield. For many reasons, the amount of product obtained in a chemical reaction in the laboratory or in industry may be less than the theoretically possible amount. Some of the reasons are: ◘ Lack of care when handling the product obtained. ◘ The reaction conditions are not suitable, for example, the temperature ◘ The pressure of the reaction system is not ideal for the process. ◘ Separating the desired product from the reaction mixture is very difficult, and not all of the product can be isolated. ◘ In some cases, a particular set of reactants leads to two or more simultaneous reactions, forming undesirable products in addition to the desired ones. ◘ The quality or purity of the raw materials is not optimal. The actual amount of product obtained is called the actual yield.
